30 Years of Cleaner Air — And We’re Just Getting Started
Feb 28, 2026In 1995, Colorado launched a vehicle emissions program with one simple goal: protect the air we breathe.
More than thirty years later, Air Care Colorado continues that mission — Caring for Colorado’s Air.
Over the decades, cleaner vehicles and improved technology have helped reduce harmful pollution along the Front Range. Families, children, and communities benefit from stronger air-quality protections every day.
And, over the past few decades, Colorado has grown, so must the program.
Emissions Inspection Fee Update Beginning March 2, 2026
Beginning March 2, 2026, the Colorado vehicle emissions inspection fee will increase from $25 to $35. This marks only the second fee adjustment in the program’s 30-year history. The first, in 2003, was 75 cents.
The inspection fee remained unchanged for more than 20 years. During that time, operating costs — including staffing, equipment upgrades, utilities, and advanced diagnostic technology — have steadily increased.
This update ensures the emissions testing program remains accurate, efficient, and properly staffed.
What the Updated Emissions Fee Supports
The updated fee allows Air Care to invest in improvements designed to enhance the customer experience, including:
- Additional staffing at high-volume Front Range emissions testing stations
- Modernized emissions testing equipment
- Expanded RapidScreen roadside emissions testing units
- A new self-service kiosk emissions testing pilot program
These improvements focus on reducing wait times and expanding convenient emissions-testing options for Colorado drivers.
Why Emissions Testing Matters in Colorado
Vehicle emissions testing is required under Colorado state law and federal Clean Air Act regulations in certain counties.
Reducing ozone-forming vehicle pollution helps:
- Improve Front Range air quality
- Protect public health
- Support compliance with federal air-quality standards
- Promote cleaner transportation
Cleaner vehicles mean cleaner air for families and communities across Colorado.
